Each round shows a real photograph and asks you to pinpoint where it was taken on an interactive world map. You score points for guessing the continent, the country, and the city, and the closer your guess lands, the more you score. The photos are the thing that sets GeoGuess apart. They are authentic photographs submitted by real travellers and community members around the world, not Street View panoramas and not AI-generated images. That means you are looking at places through the eyes of the people who were actually standing there, from famous landmarks to ordinary streets. GeoGuess launched on 2011-04-21 and has been free to play the whole time. There are no ads, no paywalls, no daily round limits, and no regions locked behind a purchase. Analytics are cookieless. There is an optional Supporter subscription and optional coin packs, listed at https://geoguess.com/pricing; both buy coins and cosmetics only, nothing that affects score or unlocks gameplay. It runs in any modern browser on desktop, tablet, and phone with no download required, and there are native apps for iOS and Android. Solo play and joining a friend's party room both work without an account. Creating a free account is optional and saves your progress, streaks, badges, and leaderboard placement. ## Game Modes ### Solo Play at https://geoguess.com/. You are shown a real photo and you drop a pin on the world map where you think it was taken. Points come from how close you land, with credit for the right continent, country, and city. No account is required and there is no cap on how many rounds you can play. ### Party Mode Play at https://geoguess.com/party. You create a private room, share the room code or link, and everyone guesses the same locations at the same time in real time. Markers from the other players appear live on the map and scores are shown after every round. Guests can join a party without creating an account, and no extra app or download is needed. A Knockout variant is also available, where the last player standing wins. ### Head-to-Head 1v1 Public entry point: https://geoguess.com/head-to-head/lobby. You duel a single opponent, either a friend or a random player, in a live timed match. Both players see the same photos and the higher total wins. Head-to-head results feed a global leaderboard. ### Daily Challenge Play at https://geoguess.com/daily. One shared location goes live each day for every player in the world, so everyone is guessing the same photo. Results rank on a global daily leaderboard, and playing each day builds a daily streak. Past days stay online in the archive at https://geoguess.com/daily/YYYY-MM-DD, where you can see the revealed location and the best guesses from that day. ### Custom Games Browse at https://geoguess.com/games. Community members build their own games from curated photo sets, and each custom game keeps its own leaderboard. Creators can share a link so friends, classmates, or a whole community play the exact same set of locations. ### Survival Play at https://geoguess.com/survival. This is the endurance mode: you keep guessing on a limited number of lives and see how many rounds you can last before you run out. Runs are ranked on the survival leaderboard. ### National Teams Play at https://geoguess.com/teams. You pick a country and play for it in a weekly country vs country ladder. Each country is ranked every week by the scores of its top 25 players, and the standings reset for a fresh race each week. ### Cup Play at https://geoguess.com/cup. A cup is a 10-day tournament made of 3 sets of 5 photos. Sets are released over the run of the cup, each set is worth one attempt, every released set stays playable until the cup closes, and the scores add up across all three onto a single leaderboard. ## Scoring A round is worth up to 5000 points and the score is driven by how far your pin lands from the true location. Anything inside 1.5 km of the answer scores the full 5000, and beyond that the score falls off with distance: solo, trial, and head-to-head rounds use an exponential decay curve, while party rounds and custom games use a linear curve that reaches zero at 5000 km. If you reveal a hint before guessing, the round is worth a percentage of what you would otherwise have scored: a continent hint keeps 80 percent, a country hint keeps 50 percent, and taking both leaves 40 percent. There is no penalty for a wrong guess beyond the points you did not earn. ## Features - Leaderboards: a weekly board, monthly season rankings, and all-time boards including total XP and top photo uploaders.
